Tip # 697 - HEALTH INSURANCE IN THE NEWS; A DEEPER DIVE

Extrapolating from a KFF chart HERE, roughly 322,000 Wisconsinites get health insurance through the ACA Marketplace. For them, the Annual Open Enrollment has just started (11/1) and continues through December 15th, for a January 1 effective date.

Click HERE to see the Insurers offering coverage in each county. Compared to last year, you’ll note there are still multiple, albeit fewer, options. A couple of carriers are just gone!

Reported ad nauseum, the “enhanced” premium tax subsides created by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2021 and extended by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) of 2022, are set to expire year-end.

That will most impact higher income individuals over age 55. For those with incomes below 400% of Federal Poverty Levels, the original ‘Obamacare’ subsides are mostly still in place.

In a CMS Fact Sheet released Thursday, net premiums will still be a fraction of what the 3.3 million Wisconsinites who get coverage through an employer sponsored group health plan pay; e.g., 30% of the $777 average single premium, or $233/month. At the risk of annoying you  (too many links?), click HERE for another KFF chart on the cost of employer sponsored plans.

“And that’s the way it is.”
